PUBLIC CHARITIES UNIT IN CONNECTICUT
The Department of Consumer Protection is responsible for administering the Connecticut Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act. Most charities who solicit contributions in Connecticut must register with the Department of Consumer Protection. The Office of the Attorney General in cooperation with the Department of Consumer Protection administers and enforces state laws regulating charities and professional fundraisers who solicit from the public. To ask if a charity is registered in Connecticut, or to see if the charity is a scam, or to complain about a charity’s fundraising practices, call the Public Charities Unit at 860-713-6170.
Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection also has produced a guide for those wanting to establish a charitable organization in the state of Connecticut. The guide can be downloaded at the following: https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/DCP/News-Releases-from-the-Department-of-Consumer-Protection/CHARITIES_GUIDE.pdf
